It would seem the producers rather agree with you. The Bond Girls have been fewer in number and less significant in the story for a while now.

Bond fucks up gloriously throughout, and essentially beats Silva through brute force and ignorance. Along the way he loses Patrice, gets Severine killed, and barely scrapes through some bad situations. And despite evrything, Silva achieves his goal of killing M (and he's already destroyed her career-wise before that.)

If you can bring yourself to rewatch Revenge Of The Sith, though, Palpatine's gambit keeps going almost fatally wrong — they survive by the skin of their teeth in the finish.
