There's also the whole issue of even if they wanted to get back into 2D feature films now, who's gonna draw em? The large majority of there 2D staff left, most up and coming new animators don't learn 2D because you're not gonna make any money doing it.
The Princess and the Frog was Disney dipping its toe back into 2D waters. Though I can't say I saw much of a campaign behind it, so it failed to find an audience.
I like the variety between the two styles. The CGI stuff that was used in The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast works really well.
I wish Disney would go back to making some 2D movies. Apparently Frozen was going to originally by 2D, but Disney changed their minds.

My disappointment with both Zack Synder Superman films, is that he doesn't seem to like the character. Which makes it odd that he's in charge of the film versions of DC's oldest superhero.
