It depends on exactly what you’re talking about. For the most part, texture on a sidewall is simply to make things stand out visually. Striations through lettering (or now on some high-end Michelins, a velour texture) are meant to cause contrast so that branding, etc. is legible.

I think the contemporary and nastolgic at the same time is what’s key here. It does channel a very 90s look, but with out making you do that little puke in your mouth thing.
