The upgraded interior is gonna be great for a certain subset of buyers — people who don’t necessarily need to show off luxury (it’s still a 30k car) but who want more comforts, amenities, and higher-quality interior touchpoints. Making it a liftback, too, adds a definite value proposition.

Um, no.  White good/ black bad is very much a European color interpretation.  In Africa and East Asia, white is the color of death.  

I don’t know that I’m a fan of it, but I’d much rather look at the spindle grille than a hideous BMW snout. Especially considering that at least Lexus is improving over time, where as BMW has let itself slide from crisp, attractive styling to a hideous, nasty mess.

The engine is saddled with a few known problems but nothing insurmountable and the treatments for them are pretty straightforward.
