@Slinkytech: I think that the temperature differential is just one part. There is also the heat capacity of the material. Lead has a high heat capacity, so a vat of melted lead has a lot more energy to transfer.

@Adamotron: It's not proprietary. It appears compatible with ordinary phones. It just has a microphone at the bottom of the hole that functions if 'phones are not plugged in.
