As someone who teaches at a Uni I cannot express how terrifying this idea really is, and how wrong headed it seems from a staff POV.

I gave this a “star”, but we all know it’s really just a baby angel fetus.

You act like this is an unanticipated downside of the bill. This is absolutely a feature in the eyes of the legislators who pushed it through. Schools have long been one of the moderating influences in the state, and these people cannot stand moderation.

Yes, it is as dire as this article paints it. Professors are being told not to teach facts and subjects that might be controversial and to alter their behavior in an effort not to anger students who might shoot them.

I teach eighteen-year-olds. Fortunately, I don’t teach a controversial subject.

I agree. Then I think, how much of a pussy do you have to be to carry a gun to keep yourself safe from learning stuff that goes against your interpretation of a very old book.

Winter is Trumping.

Gunplay is coming.

The dean of the School of Architecture at UT is named Fritz, not Frederick.

Sigh, this is what allowing society to be bullied by the impotent, unhinged ammo-maniacs has wraught.

I tried to explain what apartheid was in a lecture about music from South Africa, yesterday, and was followed to my office by an angry student who didn’t want to hear about “any #blacklivesmatter bullshit” in a course they were paying for.

I’d teach the class in Texas, but I probably wouldn’t survive the semester.

I’d say very few.

Now, when they get there and get shot to death in lecture, there will be a lot of tears about how it’s the university’s job to protect them from this madness, but my impression is that most incoming freshmen choose school by name, rather than by safety concern.

I am an adjunct at a large public university in Wisconsin, where they had proposed similar legislation. I teach courses on applied ethics, including courses on contemporary moral problems. I would basically be risking my life to teach those courses. It’s just not worth it even though I think they are important to have

Not without a trigger warning, anyway! [long shepherd's crook comes from offstage, grabs BDCB by waist, drags him off stage right followed by boos and hurled rotten fruit]

Thank you for making me laugh when I was ready to cry

Don’t worry. President Trump will send him to The Wall.

Didn’t one of the UT deans already resign? I bet that a lot of the best faculty there will start looking for positions somewhere else.

Once upon a time, a long time ago, students in Europe routinely carried swords and guns to school. They even had armed conflict with teachers from time to time. That will never happen again, right?

But liberals and safe spaces are ruining academia.

My mom is a professor. If this happened in her college, she would retire. This doesn't make people safer. In fact, a number of people would be scared by this. I'm not sure if it would really deter a shooter or make the shooting worse.
