I was right there with you at launch. Game has changed a lot since then. Total overhaul of mission system helped my enjoyment immensely.

You might not have played it lately - as in, in the last year or so. You can absolutely help a faction take over a system. Personally i’m enjoying the (somewhat lucrative) passenger quests right now, although with recent events I think I gotta reengineer for space exploration and seek out some giant alien starfish...
