Except a lot of what WoW did was corner the market rather than grow it. There were a set number of people interested in playing fantasy MMOs- and due to the nature of an MMO, the more of your friends are playing it, the more likely you are to try it. Once you’ve tried it, you’re more likely to return.
Wow is somewhat free to play - all the vanilla content is F2P. And it’s certainly got micro transactions.
