As a dad I'll say that (in my experience, others' mileage will vary) for every one of these "hellish" experiences that Drew writes up in a humorously exaggerated manner there are many, many times more fantastic moments that quite honestly top anything I ever experienced before becoming a dad.

I would hypothesize that a large part of Federally owned land is national parks; this is definitely true in states like Idaho. By definition, these are protected lands against development, including housing, shopping, and infrastructure, which are all needed for people to actually live there.
