Mary Shelley probably had no more interest than women of any other era in listening to her husband’s friends re-telling their “What a wild dude I am” stories. Regardless whether the tales revolve around opium or brewskis plus naked women /strippers, that kind of boasting gets old fast.

Why would he rat them out? He probably still gets together over drinks and cigars with those other rapists to reminisce about the good old days when no one identified rape culture for what it was/is.

I think it’s funny that you consider yourself a shitty feminist when your level of awareness and openness puts you ahead of a lot of men.

Since I’m not into men, I feel indifferent to Marco Rubio’s attire or lack thereof. But if you and other spectators would enjoy adding that element to the trial by combat spectacle, fine by me.

Are you saying this would be a bad thing?

If trial by combat is going to become a thing, I’d like that to be the format of the Republican convention.

Can’t help but wonder if the book would have caused TSA so much worry if carried by 13,000 members of a mostly white sorority, rather than one of the “Divine Nine” traditionally black Greek letter organizations.

I wonder if the writers were deliberately alluding to Cosby’s treatment of women, since many articles reference the fact that it was an open secret for years.

I like to think that his wife, while publicly defending him, actually sees the truth of what he is. She’s just biding her time until she can create a plausible “accidental” death for him, then collect the inheritance and insurance (and then, hopefully, provide settlements to all the victims).

Unfortunately, there’s often little cultural approval for empathy, so many people learn to either shed it or hide it. Usually a few news stories a year get an outpouring of “those poor people” and “how can we help.” But for many news stories, glibly cynical reactions receive more acceptance than compassion.

Phillips’ blog post ends rather weakly. He suggests that Cosby “go live a quiet country life” so that those who love him can “preserve just a bit of our enchantment.” No suggestion at all of accountability. I understand that most of Cosby’s crimes are beyond the statute of limitations, but it seems at the very least

More fetus fetishizing from the fundies.

Makes a great origin story if the daughter ever decides to become a cult leader: And so it was foretold that the goddess Marisa of the sea [actually the meaning of that name] would be born amidst tall trees, and her birth would be attended by honey-gatherers and by the element of fire . . .

This is such a perfect metaphor for celebrity. Hard to know anything about people when you’re looking down on them, but you can still use them for some quick, cheap personal branding.

Yeah, that whole stereotypical narrative that gets imposed when a man is the one who cheats in a hetero relationship is so rife with misogyny. People unthinking accept the notion that the other woman is a shameless homewrecking slut while the poor innocent man couldn’t help himself . It’s another one of those

I wasn’t talking about Shania Twain, and I agree shared parenting responsibilities add an extra layer of complexity to an ex situation. I was talking about the tendency many people have to excuse their ex while demonizing the other man/woman.

True. If you’re considering becoming friends or lovers with someone, and in talking about their past, they display bitter resentment toward the person who “stole” their ex but have much milder feelings about the ex, run. This is a sign of delusion and immaturity.

Thanks!

Back in the 80s, a friend from college invited me to be her bridesmaid. We lived hundreds of miles from each other, and had only exchanged brief letters in the years since graduation. I shouldn’t have accepted, but I thought it would be fun to see her and the people we used to hang out with.
