Based on my anecdotal experience with an old Tiger rice cooker (it sounds so weird to say the English term for it instead of the Cantonese) that is still ticking, I'd like to think you got a lemon. I couldn't speak for their support since I've never had to contact them, but I get where you're coming from.

You could try Tiger for rice cookers. It doesn't have the brand cache that Zojirushis do, but they work perfectly well.
