They're not motivated by religion. They're motivated by rage and hatred, and using their (twisted, fanatic version of their) religion to justify acting out that rage.

I… don't know what to say, except I'm sorry.

Yeah, the BBC included the existance of this new feature in its live reporting on the attacks, and I have to say my immediate response was… not positive either. I can see why it exists, and it probably will be helpful to people worried about friends and family, but something about it feels unpleasantly opportunistic.

Yes, agreed. Thing is, "soul-eaters" doesn't really sound like such a bad idea - there might be a whole lot of interesting angles to it, but he's not going with any of them. Sigh.

It's weird how returning to one's parents after some time away can sometimes let one see them in a new light, which then gives a whole new context to one's own issues. I've been going through a similar thing with my mum, and, without going into endless boring personal detail, it was doing my head in for a while.

I feel like Margaret Atwood's books are all like that - great reads, but somehow lacking in depth. Even The Handmaid's Tale didn't leave a huge impression on me except for the basic concept.

I read Slade House by David Mitchell over the past weekend. It has all the David Mitchell hallmarks - a whole array of different, well-imagined voices, the telling in the form of interlocking vignettes, the links to his other books, the beautiful prose -, and it's fairly creepy, but somehow I just don't love this

I'm an absolute diet coke fiend. I could happily drink nothing else all day if I let myself.

She is remarkably game and lacking in vanity in the funny, super-dark short about a washed-up horror movie actress Conventional

Happy birthday!

I did not know that. But at least Fargo made the right call - she was one of the best things about a show that really was not short on great things to recommend it. Also, "traditionally attractive" or not, she has that thing in spades that means you could watch her watching paint dry for two hours and not get bored.

I know I'm wasting my energy here, but I'm actually really pissed off about this, because it's so blatantly, tediously obvious why she isn't getting the roles she deserves.

The whole snooper's charter thing is just utterly batshit insane, to the point where words fail me. No-one should have those sorts of powers. Not a supposedly benign government, certainly not a potential future fascist or otherwise evil government, and absolutely not a shower of fools who are entirely capable of

I have some tax stuff I should be taking care of. It's bad enough that it'll probably result in me having to pay money I don't easily have, but what I'm really terrified of is that it might lead to complications and endless, stressful tangles with bureaucracy. Still, I need to get on it, as I'm not getting any less

Happens all the time on the TI. You can, as @avclub-b20754d0f1e8ae843e00a8b39a667112:disqus says, resort the comments; if you have an actual Disqus profile, you can also go there to edit. Or you can come back later. Laaaaaaaaaaaaaater. When it's all calmed down, threads will usually load again. Maybe.

Wow, no girls whatsoever in the foreground. Yup.

Slade House and The Paying Guests finally arrived from Amazon, so I… put them on the pile and still haven't started reading anything. Maybe on the weekend…

Thanks - if my irritation overcomes my inertia before someone at the AVClub notices and gets it fixed, I'll try that.

Hey, AVClub, where has the "Find shows" thingy gone? It's not on the front page, it's not on the TVClub main page, it only shows up on the individual review pages. Which, while we're at it, please stop with the crappy spoilerish review headlines. Thank you.
