Imagine how quaint our ”uncongested”and “analogue” cars today will feel in 50 years. These are the good old days where we have reliable cars we can drive ourselves anywhere and plenty of gasoline infrastructure.

Charm in cars comes from idiosyncracies and plenty of modern cars have them. My Cruze appears pretty generic but the unique without being annoying central locking adds a bit of interest. Old cars just have them to a much greater degree because they were not run through hordes of committees to dilute anything unique.

The solution is to make a bare bones car that costs slightly more than you would expect. My friend’s absolute base model 2014 Jeep Patriot literally only has one feature: A/C. I think the VW UP! really fills that role in other markets. In America such a vehicle is notably absent. There are cheap cars that are pretty terrible (Versa) but not cheap cars that are both good and have character.

I don't think the Crosstour was so so bad, but the Cygnet was truly wrong in every sense of the word.
