Yes you could really say this about any new technology until proven otherwise. AR still unproven. As far as smartphones...the internet didn’t exist. Smartphones without the internet wouldn’t solve anything.

Well that’s a pretty subjective point the article is making. I have a Google Home Hub which in no way reduces my use of other internet connected devices in my home. In fact it just adds a new one. And that’s fine.

The future isn’t grim. AI is still fundamentally a very complicated tool. AI is a glorified, efficient servant. It all comes down to humans again. The masters, howsoever augmented.

It is not the first Daydream VR. Htc has released one already in China.
