The mod community at this point will be the only thing that could save the game. A vast majority of people have left negative reviews or moved on due to all the empty promises. I never really got into the series for the reasons you first stated. My first exposure was the older titles that were difficult to understand or do much with. Later I did play Ultima Online but only in the most basic sense. Was still a little young for that and gaming was still getting its footing.

That is the issue with sequels though that many developers do not understand in that early quote of Masato Kato. They want to reinvent the wheel down to its core rather then improve or augment or pay homage. Which is really quite foolish. If you wish to redo it from the ground up create a new game not a sequel.
