I dunno, as much as I abhor pageants, this woman is obviously accomplished and intelligent, and she's lost a significant amount of money in scholarships... ridiculous pageantry aside, that really sucks for her, and it's sad that she's being treated so poorly by people who should have been looking out for her.

There are some really good alternatives to the American Girl series. I really liked some of the Dear America diary-style books when I was a kid (the Revolutionary War diary had a particular impact on me, growing up in a historical region of Upstate NY).
