They dumped the bodies down the shaft with plans of moving the bodies to a nearby sewer line or some other water source and floating the corpses that way. I think we can assume that the final part is already done.

I think if I see some thing grab my baby when I got out of bed to check on a noise I might wonder if its real or if i'm dreaming…until it knocks me over on its way out the door with the baby. From there I think i'd be pretty convinced of what happened.
