Perhaps the hole is to assure complete cooking? A trick with thick hamburger patties is to put a depression in the center (I’ve done a hole too) to get “doneness” throughout.

I’m a Canadian with Scandinavian ancestory. I love the cold and absolutely wither in the heat. But, while my body enjoys a lower thermostat in winter (our bedroom window is open pretty much all winter) my hands get too cold.
