I like the Nomad wagon way better anyway
That was my experience as well. In engineering school over a decade ago, most of the other black students were African or children of African immigrants. Come to think of it, I only know one other black engineer who doesn’t fit into this category. In your scenario, I’d be the other one of the 2 grads.
You started a doozy of a thread
If I told you I had the answers, I’d be lying. I only go by what I’ve observed myself and what I can read and deduct from the numbers. With that said, here’s what I think:
Diversity hiring is alleviating a symptom. I agree that in many industries, there are actually a lack of applicants - and I want to be specific…
It’s always interesting how all of that shouldn’t be in play when it comes to minorities asking for equality, but it never occurs that all of that is exactly what was in play for generations when we were excluded. Again, we’re not asking for special treatment or to make up for past sins. At least not when it comes to…
Right. I’m not asking for black people to be included in the nepotism. That would be unfair. What all of these anti diversity hire people aren’t understanding is that we don’t want anybody hired via nepotism, and we’re challenging the assumption that white dudes are the most qualified because...it was decided that…
Would you say that Ford is a large, public facing company that requires specific optics to avoid being characterized by previous missteps due to leadership?
“A place” is not widespread. Anecdote is not the plural of datum, etc. And I never called anybody racist.
For better or worse, I’ll ungrey this.
It’s not happening all around us. You said it yourself: “a specific position”. These are largely positions that require optics and are very public. Sort of like a Vice President of a government which I’ll remind you, is not a company. White guys and asians are presently over…
I try to be gracious (but cautious) online because often wording things on the internet can be tricky. We probably mostly agree (aside from Hollywood being representative of this problem) but I don’t think it’s really a concern. Minorities don’t want to be tokens, and companies don’t want to hire unqualified people
I wish that outlook were true across the board though. In tech (my industry and arguably where tesla sort of fits) it largely isn’t and there have been many missteps trying to fix it. It can’t just be PR or hiring to check boxes and fill numbers.
I’m with you here. I agree that there are “autonomous” vehicles, but consumer cars are not what comes to mind
If you feel like you fit into that box, then jump in. All I know is that more often than not, folks responding the way that you do “don’t see color” or some nonsense. If that’s not you, then move on.
That’s shitty man. I’m sorry that happens. Best of luck out there
I haven’t seen anything specific in general workplace stuff as of yet though.
That’s because the high profile companies often have founders or leadership (sort of the whole point of this article) that have benefited from such systems and have historically hired people like them that they knew, rather than the people who ARE most qualified. The assumption that up until now the most qualified…
1 - Show me, specifically, where I called you racist. You’re being mighty defensive
2 - Again, show me, specifically, where this is happening because it’s just not true.
You’re missing my point. I largely got in the door because I was qualified AND they thought I was white. Any POC is familiar with the reaction and it is unmistakable. They couldn’t turn me away because I had already proven I was qualified by the time it occurred to them I was black.
Forced by who exactly? Be specific. From my point of view, it looks like they’re no longer assuming that the white dudes are the most qualified by virtue of existing. The numbers seem to agree. If what you say is happening, then we should be seeing lots of minority led organizations failing left and right because…
This is the best explanation for this.
