I don’t know but as a kid we would swim in Lake Huron for hours and come home with the trots so unless it’s become cleaner in recent years I’m guessing that won’t make much of a difference in water quality? Lead poisoning is another matter.

I’ve heard similar stories from (very) young Asian American girls who visit Asia. They are constantly being mistaken for baby hookers by Western white men.
Truthfully, I think the majority of the sexual and romantic attention I get abroad is because of the stereotypes and perceptions of what an American woman/a Black woman/a Black American woman will “do”, generally, and especially while on vacation
I’m from a small town near Dublin, and most of my sister’s friends are in the recently-immigrated-African community there. I have seen exactly what you describe - but I think your explanation is only half the story.
Thank you. I feel the same way.. I don’t think the attention is coming from a good place. Many think bc ur a dark American you’re a slut. Or they fetishize you bc of your exotic looks. But mostly I think they have warped notions of what women of color will do sexually. Either way you’re an object to them not a person.…
This article made me a bit uncomfortable because it ignores or at least neglects to mention that anti-Black racism and colorism happen all over the world. It is absolutely not just an American thing.
This is fair, and I found it as an American student abroad in Europe and especially North africa. Some dudes even just called out “hey, sex and the city!” Those are cat callers but I felt like that sentiment underpinned my experiences from Marrakech to the Norwegian guy I slept with in London. And bc so much of the…
Same thing I was going to say. While in Bahia, Brazil, while I felt welcome and comfortable due to me being black, once people realized I was American, their tone would change, and their flirtation would become more aggressively sexual. I would go out with my friend from Hawaii who is fair skinned and mixed race, and…
Yep also i have to add that here in UK black Americans are treated with more respect than black Brits, sometimes they can come away as if the UK does not have any problem with racism. But I do find it easier to date as minority in UK than US.
I hear ya.
Thank you, this is a way better way of expressing my dubiousness over the situation
This is a well-written, thought-provoking article.
I knooww. He sucks but his sass was such an integral part of my republican debate drinking game parties!
interesting to see where his voters will go
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie is reportedly set to announce on Wednesday that he’s dropping out of the…
Ah yes, let’s judge people based on their last names. Djohan is most commonly from Indonesia, Khumar is Indian, Latif is Arabic, so a fairly wide range of cultures, languages and belief systems.
So is “purity” the new ‘Hillary supporter trying to dismiss Bernie supporters’ buzzword? You people are using it as a hand-wave maneuver when anyone brings up all the blatantly non-progressive things Hillary has done.
Right? I get the sense here that people think (people being HRC supporters) that just because I 100% support Bernie, that I’ll either completely abstain or vote Republican if Hillary gets the nomination. That’s effing insane logic. Just because I don’t like her doesn’t mean I’m going to risk letting the other side…
Totally not a bad thing. But “moderate vs progressive” is bad optics if you’re running for the nomination of a supposedly progressive party, Clinton and Sanders are both well aware of that. Clinton has backpedaled on her ‘moderate’ pride in an attempt to reframe the question as “practical vs idealistic” or whatever…
Well, she’s not a moderate, but she was part of the “3rd way” Democratic movement- something that was rightly called Democrats for corporations. People seem to have forgotten that bit when they talk about her “progressive” stances.
