This is tangential I suppose, but I appreciate that you mentioned that many men are fleeing conscription and/or going ahead on the dangerous journey of a refugee with the intention of bringing their brides/families once they are safely established somewhere else. Apparently these valid reasons for Syrian men to be

My daughter just got married and my son’s wedding is this fall so I have been very... droll... about weddings for a while now. Not anymore. It feels wrong to mock something I get to take for granted while others would give anything for the opportunity.

In Germany they were known as Stahlhelmhochzeit (steel helmet wedding), named after the typical helmet of the German army. The groom had to write an authorization that he agreed to marry his bride. This was read out when it would have been his turn to say “I do”.

The headline seems very matter-of-fact to me. I don’t see how it’s making fun.

I feel like my utter contempt for the wedding industrial complex and my bleeding heart empathy for the displaced just had a five-car collision.

Many of these brides will go to meet their husbands once they have established themselves in a new country. One bride, Siwar, went on to meet her husband in the Netherlands, where they will retake their wedding photo to replace a previously Photoshopped version.

This is sad. I can see why they are having them. It's pretty sad when it's rare to see a groom at his own wedding.

Indeed. So much opportunity for snark, yet all of it inappropriate.

Similar weddings happened during WWII.

I was going to be snarky about weddings without men being preferable anyway, but this is so heartbreaking :(

yeah, her passion and love for our people got me weeping, but I can’t even get myself to give her that blue star or share the video because of all the black-on-black shit. like boo boo i’m pretty sure Europeans divided us long before we had access to guns.

This. I mean if she doesn’t know the proper stats or can see the reality of what the stats mean, it’s no wonder so many regular citizens are blind and use that bs excuse. I’d have expected her to know how much of a farce that idea is.

That turned me ALL THE WAY OFF. I can’t believe she even said something about these things happening to us because we’re “divided” and not “standing up” and a bunch of shit like that. Sure, she said some other great stuff and obviously got emotional, but the problem isn’t just racist white cops. It’s all of them, no

She will lose her job.

Either she will be terminated, or she will be castigated by her “brothers and sisters in blue,” and resign for her and her family’s safety.

So this week, by tomorrow, we’ll have one cop fired for posting a video, and zero cops fired for shooting black men in scenarios escalated solely by the police involved.

Even if they’re not overtly professional penalties, the odds of disgusting blowback from her peers on the force are high.

I saw this on the news this morning (I live outside of Cleveland). First thought was:

She will.

I really, really hope she doesn’t receive any professional penalties from this.

Not anymore - it was cancelled.
