I’m baffled by a ton of these comments regarding that GM directly killed people and should pay more than VW because VW hasn’t directly killed anyone.

NOx kills in the long term due to direct health concerns when it reacts with things in the air.

WHO published an official study linking high NOx levels to about 400,000 deaths a year in Europe, diesel being one of the main contributors to NOx concentration.

I doubt it’s widespread. There are lots of cases of tweaking the numbers, teaching to the test, etc. but I can’t conceive of something so blatant happening.

GM did not “intend” to kill this people, and it was a “flaw” (I know, they knew, and they took way to long to fix this etc), the people driving the cars could get out of the situation in some cases, it is a much more complicated case to prove intent.

Intentional deception of Uncle Sam vs cheapening out on a part and not acknowledging their fuckup for too long because the failure rate was so low.
