A) GM uses LG as their battery supplier. And Tesla does not have a monopoly on batteries, they just have the most energy dense batteries in the industry, followed by LG in 2nd place. Everyone else in terms of energy density and cost is too far behind.

You don’t see Model T on the road because in many places they can’t be on the highway, so often times they will take the side roads. There was an interesting race between the Model S and Model T prior to the supercharger network done by caranddriver.

A) Hard to say if it was even an attempt because the only reason it was made was to comply with the government mandates. An attempt would mean with intention of actually displacing the ICE, which it was not.

A) I am not saying that the EV1 did not lead to anything, it did. If anything the Prius was in a way a reaction to the EV1. But the point I was getting at is modern EVs, not overall contribution to cars.

It is hard to judge, most Tesla Roadster owners were happy with it. Obviously it was Tesla’s first car so there was bound to be issues but it is hard to quantify how people feel towards their cars regardless of issues. Some people still ride Ford Model T and it has even worse reliability, not to mention the hassles

A) The Bolt is practically an LG car more than a GM car, most of GM’s bets in the battery space unfortunately failed, pushing them to work with LG who makes a huge chunk of the car. That said, the only one who has any real battery production is Tesla.

Modern plugin EVs do not use the NiMH batteries in the EV1. On top of that most of the stuff in there was already outdated 10 years later. Again, the EV1 has its significance in EV history but the start of the modern EV is the Tesla Roadster.

As I explained, that issue lies with early Nissan Leafs who chose crappy LMO chemistry with air cooling(instead of liquid cooling). So anyone who had a Leaf in hot climates ended up having their batteries cooked. (Heat is batteries worst enemy)

I never said the gigafactory is the only game in town, I am saying that the gigafactory is the only real production in town. The gigafactory is already producing batteries today (for the powerwall). The 4 years timetable is for the factory to be at max capacity.

Tesla is doing just fine as a company, they are using the same proven model as Henry Ford. Start with premium cost cars and use the profit to fund lower cost production cars.

Not sure where you are getting with the EV1 comment, I am not saying the EV1 was not significant for EVs, but it is not a modern EV. As modern EVs use lithium ion batteries which work fairly different from NiMH batteries in the EV1. And the issue is again GM did not want to make the car, it was legislated into

Every manufacturer gives an 8 year warranty on their batteries, (If you are in NY or CA and a hybrid/plugin hybrid it is 10 years) with most having way over 8 year of lifespan. The EV1 was progress at the time, but overall it was highly flawed because it was legislated into existence. Once the legislation was taken away, GM crushed them.
