I agree that it’s on the buyer to perform his/her due diligence - BUT it also sounds like Mecum clearly misrepresented the car, intentionally deceived the buyer and tried to shield themselves from their nefarious behavior. Just because one person in a situation is kind of an idiot doesn’t mean the other party isn’t…

Law on their side or not this has got to hurt Mecum’s reputation and sales.

I don’t think I would’ve written a check for a vehicle I knew to be a fraud. Let Mecum sue you and advertise the fact that they can lie to you about a car they’re auctioning. See what that does for their future business.
