As much as I am in favor of electric off-road vehicles, I have this feeling that someone’s hooked car companies on things they might not be able to sell. Electric’s nice and all, but I am really curious if the demand is there for all of it.

All I can say is it looks different in person, I think.

Could have a truck with a crane and tesla walls trundling about, like an oil tanker. Drop it at a gas station, come back next week, or something.

Yeah, not today, but it’s not that far away. Could have a truck trundling around, onloading and offloading tesla walls or something, as soon as electrics hit significant market penetration.

Here’s a fun thing Ferry gave my dad.

Dad’s 996 Turbo is now on its third glass battery, after the first two mysteriously died - one after a week, one after a year.

That is serious stuff. And yeah, I was visualizing it as a rock buggy - Moab stuff like Torch does - that’s going down a heavy trail and back, high difficulty, low distance. I figure, assuming full penetration of electric, you can assume a charging spot roughly where every gas station is.

Why would you rev the electric engine? It’s got a flat torque curve.

With electric, it doesn’t and there’s no such thing as 4Low.

Yeah, how close is the gas station to the trail head? I figure you can assume a charger at the location of the nearest gas station.

How far do you go when off-roading? It’s tricky and slow, but it’s not long-distance.

Hm. Still two feet longer than a Suzuki Samurai.

I waaaaant it.

I like the way you think. Except when the battery dies, engaging the immobilizer and then you have to jump the fusebox WITH the key in the door. Which is a problem when the key’s stuck in the ignition.

#1: A 996 turbo does not have IMS bearing issues. The 996.5 AWD Turbo makes my dad very happy. You could get a solid deal if you can find one.

I hear you, man. I’m not even thinking of suggesting the easy way to do it - I’m just saying there’s a potential stopper with the tools on the plane.

Good call on the cinch straps.

So VERY much so. I’d mail ahead to either Andrew or a UPS store dead drop to pick up later.

Why not mail parts ahead? It’s probably a lot safer than carry-on.

I should point out that I am currently a WRX driver. And a former Camry driver. (Said Camry was an ‘07 V6, and fully capable of humiliating contemporary Mustangs when I was done with it.)
