The driving experience and towing capacity (8000 freaking pounds) of the V8 is night and day. In that small/light of an SUV, it makes a huge difference to have full-time AWD and a V8. It feels more luxurious than it is.

Exactly right - I always liked these and strongly considered one when I was ready to replace my 2001 Olds Aurora with the ShortStar 3.5L V6, which was very reliable for the six years I owned it.

It’s hard to imagine driving one of these things without feeling basic as hell, but nevertheless this is the closest any manufacturer has come to building the ultimate outdoor activity vehicle. The fact that too few of them will use more than 5% of that capability is unfortunate, but I don’t hold it against the truck.
