I hear you - and in most cases, I've never bothered. I just install the new version over the old version, and I have no problems.

Interesting - I found a fix for drawing FPS in-game with Mantle on, using the console (see my comment below). I'm doing some FPS testing right now, with Mantle on. I'll turn it off and compare.

OH. You can still test FPS in-game with Mantle, and you don't even need a third-party program.

Don't forget: if you have a recent-ish AMD card (I have a 7970, and that fits the bill), enable Mantle. It's in the Display settings, where you'll see DirectX 11. I played the hell out of this game when I was a kid, but the extent of my meta game (once I had all 120 stars) was pretty much surfing around in that first level on a green turtle shell, pretending like it was Tony Hawk or something.
