I haven’t seen the documentary but have no reason to doubt their sincerity. My quibble is the over-use of “punching down.” Because I haven’t seen the doc, I don’t know id “punching down” is their word or your word. The issues with Apu are far more nuanced than “punching down.”

But not everything is “punching down.” The writers for Gilligan’s Island weren’t “punching down” at rich people with their portrayal of the Howells. “Punching down” just doesn’t fit here.
