Sure they did, but they didn't have to. They chose to go in that direction. Knowing Jobs' insanity, he could have easily chosen the route to "go it on their own," but they didn't they chose BSD and benefits/etc. that came with it. You use the word "had to," but for me they chose to go in that direction.

Because it's open source, Google/MS/anyone can recompile and do what they wish with it. The question is if someone like Google/MS would do it, but probably not due to competitive reasons - even though it is open source.
