It is common for dual clutch transmissions to have zero torque loss during shifts, by engaging (and slipping) both clutches at once.

I’ve been saying this for years.

As a counterpoint, I only did a few cruises back when I was in a college car club precisely *because* they were so boring- we drove the speed limit or with traffic the whole time. And this wasn’t a lame bunch of guys (or cars) either, they just always behaved during the cruises for exactly this reason.

Seems no one else has referenced this yet. From WRC 2007:

I’d love to type a huge rant about this, but for now I’ll just say:

Mazda’s Skyactiv engines are not “peaky”, and are in fact the opposite.

Today, I am a rally mechanic and driving instructor- but I didn’t even get my driver’s license until I was 21.

Reminder: This study quantifies *fans* of those brands (or at least people talking about them), and not necessarily owners. Case in point- Bugatti does not have 221,000 owners.

You root for the engineers.

This comment is late, but I had to call out your excellent use of “Carbrian explosion”. Well done.

Note that beyond the Amateur series you touched on, this would also affect certain professional cars and series... like Rally cars. Even the highest level cars start out as road cars. And no, they can’t keep the stock emissions equipment because anti-lag destroys them in short order.

Woah, woah... The big news here is that not only did you find three examples of this drivetrain layout to talk about, but TWO of them are physically present at the museum you frequent!? What an incredible museum! Do they have *everything*!? (I’ve read all your other articles)

Oh god yes. This article couldn’t have been better timed. I believe my wife is in denial about when I’m going to start carrying our kid in my brand new 2016 Miata. I’ve decided to wait until the spring thaw, but there’s no real reason why I couldn’t do it right now.

Exhaust above subframe.

I need to find more stars to give you

Negative. Not a good thing if you’re a rally team looking to develop this vehicle for competition.

Holy crap, I am most impressed by that semi-transparent material! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen something so effective like that.

Scrolled deep through the comments to find this one. Stars for you.

To be clear, the sport model trim in the US, which is the base model (still with 2.0L 155hp engine), weighs 2277 lbs full of fuel. This is mildly significant because I wasn’t able to find any publication of the weight of this trim level.

What couldn’t have helped was that foreign object placed on the outside of the entry to the corner, which if absent would have allowed the drivers a wider approach to the apex.
