I was waiting for Ruby to point this out to Dre. She laid blame on Bow, but honestly, their faith is kind of a background thing for the Johnsons. We’ve seen Dre talk more about being a sneakerhead than being a Christian.

Christianity was also used to justify the slave trade from its inception.

The centrality of the church in the “black community” and the extreme devotion of so many black people to the church are terrible hindrances to the progress of black Americans.

I specifically watched it because I wanted to see how they would handle this subject matter.

You are very right on this. However, blacks mainly will not mention this when discussing religion. In fact, African Americans are tougher on Creole sects such as voodoo than whites themselves.

It took me a long time to shrug off the religious trappings of my childhood and culture. Even when I’d be publicly declaring my atheism I’d sometimes temper or adjust it to agnosticism, out of that ingrained fear that the whole idea might be true.

I don’t watch it any more; it’s too compromising for my tastes

I always wondered about that argument from Cons that black people voted for Obama bc he’s black..... Why wouldn’t the black community throw their entire support behind Ben Carson then and switch parties? That’s how shallow that “logic” is. Oh and also to imply that black ppl are too stupid to make up their own minds

I know...but the fervor, the intensity to vote for Obama by AA folks was mainly driven because he was black. Irish-Americans did the same for Kennedy. The numbers look more lopsided for Obama because we regularly vote Democrats at a 90% rate

No, I knew her mom was the awesome voiced Minnie Ripperton who died much too soon.

I hadn’t realized that this show was still on. The one and a half episodes that I watched annoyed me so I stopped. I am glad some folks find it interesting and useful though.

Sure, 99% of us voted for Obama. But not all voted for him because he’s black, we voted for him because he’s Democrat. Most of us wouldn’t touch Herman Cain with a ten-foot pole.

Black non big 3 believer here and i approve this article.

I did not like how they did this at all. First, when Dre talked about why Black people tend to be Christian and talked about slavery, not once did he mention that the religion was initially FORCED upon enslaved Africans. He implied that they chose it to give themselves hope. Second, I hate that being atheist was

Here’s another one that might surprise you: look up who Maya Rudolph’s mother was.

I’m just happy they acknowledged black atheism. I recently told my family that i’m an atheist and always have been, my hubby who i thought would be blaze about it cried and blamed himself for my lack of belief, never-mind that i’ve never believed. Coming from an African super catholic family and having married into a

A Lutheran church? Bish whet?

TIL Tracy Ellis Ross is Diana Ross’ daughter and went to Le Rosey in Switzerland. So jelly.....

All in all, for a 23 minute sitcom, not bad. Erring on the side of caution is not a shock or surprise. Kudos for even broaching the topic at all.
