You cannot bomb/kill your way to victory here. What the news reports all fail to mention, is that every time a Russian “dumb bomb” strikes civilians (which is quite often), those civilians become even more dead-set against Assad, who they now see as a Russian puppet.

You’re assuming Saddam would have survived the Arab Spring. Given the status of Iraq, and the sectarian makeup in the country, there’s little reason to believe Saddam would have fared any better than Assad— especially with the GCC pushing Saddam out the door once-and-for-all by using the protests as cover.
