The real trick here is to just use the previous bag of charcoal’s paper bag.  Usually comes in 3 layers which can be peeled apart easily.  Usually one bag worth of paper lasts me through the next.  And if I’m bootstrapping (have no previous bags to use) I’ll keep the stupid yellow pages books that I still randomly get.

PBS’s recipe has worked without fail for years. I suspect the difference is in the stirring method. I don’t just shake the pot back and forth. As suggested, I pick it up and shake it up and down (with holders of course.) I’ve yet to burn it, and it always comes out mostly popped with a good caramelized sugar coating.
