Think of a the actual surface of the ground on a single plane. If you actually tried to trace out the line it made at very small scales, it would end up ~infinitely long. Even a smooth surface is extremely complex at microscopic levels.

I read a paper once about how the shoreline of the UK, just as one example, is infinitely long if you look close enough. I believe it involved fractals
