The problem is mate, not everyone is Gabe. Plus Gabe also recreated, simplified and almost perfected the path to digital distribution which helped him make his own company, to the point where all creative control over their games belonged to them. Not to mention the economic climate was much better back then.

The publishers provide the money, that's the appeal. It's the publishers that controls the majority of that flow of money. Not to mention most of the time the publishers will advertise that game. Plus in reality Kickstarter isn't a reliable option, EA is more reliable than Kickstarter.
