By all means get off the internet and put on a uniform. Leave your family to figure out evacuation on their own, while you pound the pavement of a congested freeway looking for a needle in a haystack whose presence in no way negatively impacts your life. Sounds super fulfilling and very necessary.

Except these checkpoints will also snare documented immigrants (possibly even naturalized citizens) because during an emergency evacuation, sometimes you misplace papers while fleeing for your life.

That’s a naive sentiment: CBP traditionally closes the checkpoints in natural disasters, because the misdemeanor (yes, it’s a misdemeanor) of crossing the border illegally does not trump public safety. And that’s public safety in all circumstances: perhaps you would be surprised by the occasional traffic flushes at

To protect the community in general. They have broad latitude, especially in how they define “community,” often negotiated with their union. It’s why the cops around wall street were more interested in protecting bankers than protesters.

But if they don’t do their job, it’s between them and their bosses. At worst it’s an administrative issue. I’ve still never seen anything showing that the person who gets hurt has any recourse. So if the cop doesn’t help you, and their chief doesn’t care, nothing happens.

It’s a terrifying state of affairs. And I’d love to be wrong, but I don’t think I am.

Supreme Court cases are the definition of citations when it comes to legal matters. I don’t know what else you’re looking for.

I don’t know how these “checkpoints” work, but in an area where traffic congestion is already predicted along evacuation routes, won’t this make it worse? Even if you think, in principle, that this is justified, it seems like the negative impact on *everyone’s* evacuation would make it not worth it.

Look up the Starlight Tours. You guys have your own problems.

I want to know when the men who attacked Deandre Harris are going to be arrested. I’ve seen headlines that people have been named and that the process will take a bit because they’re out of state residents, but damn. Seems like it’s been long enough.

Well, of course they didn’t do anything; he’s a white dude expressing racial hatred. It’s not like he did anything, you know, dangerous, like existing as a person of color.

It’s darkly, cynically hilarious how undocumented immigrants aren’t even considered part of the ‘public’ anymore. They’re just the method for overheated goons to exercise the permission they’ve been given to bully and intimidate vulnerable people.

Yeah, this was the firs thing I thought of:

Listen, Mexico needs to pay for this wall to protect us from the hurricane since it originated in their gulf.

This could not only end up causing undocumented immigrants to risk their own and family’s lives, but could also end up risking the lives of rescue workers who may have to go after them.

Everyone at the checkpoint is somewhere between encouraged and required to show ID.

Curious, how does one accomplish this without racial profiling?
