Oh you are right, there have been so many useful overlay technologies. And this technology is highly applicable to every thing, it will replace cell phones and PCs. I cannot wait for popup ads projected into my eye while I walk through the supermarket.
Brilliant! So you finally understand why this technology only really works in dark rooms and why something that modifies an input video signal works much better for most AR applications. Imagine this replacing a desktop or other similar device... you can’t even use it to view photos because the photos are not opaque…
If that were the case an app like word lens (or the new google translate that incorporated the word lens technology) would be very different. As would the AR cards that come with the nintendo 3ds, and really most decent AR implementation I’ve seen.
I’m not saying it can’t have a useful interface without blacks, I’m saying that in addition to there being no blacks you will see through everything anything that is behind it and either reflects or emits light. Correct... but to make something black requires the absense of light, for there to be no light there needs to be something in between you and light. The glasses can not go opaque at only specific areas, it has an electrical current passed through it that causes the whole lens to darken. Making black text impossible.
It effects the whole glass, not just selected parts. I’m not saying you can’t make the lens opaque, I’m saying you can’t make specific sections opaque. Like black text floating in front of you.
I don’t believe you need the technology to exist to file a patent for a concept but given that LCDs are not transparent an “LCD occlusion mask” is basically the same as saying “strapped a screen to a face” as all the light would then be occluded by the LCD and it would be the equivalent of a mask.
The minipc linked here is between 1 and 3 thousand dollars... why not buy a router?
To clarify the biggest downfall of the magic leap and any other transparent glass based AR technology: How do you make something black while using light?
Oh... I didn’t realize LCDs can be transparent... (probably because they can’t). Like I said, short of streaming a live video onto an opaque screen, it just doesn’t work like that. Lets assume you use some technology like OLEDs for a transparent display, if you look up at the sun the LEDs cannot remove the suns light,…
