Also Darla, to be honest. Every single time they wrote out of a female character on that show, it was a “Woman gives birth, is no longer useful” situation.

In retrospect the Fred/Illyria possession doesn’t read well either, as another stacked example of women’s bodies being used as a means to an end.

Yes, Cole’s article basically ended desire to watch anything new and I’m now at the point of closing the door on him. I did verge on stan, which likely did impact my thoughts, but at this point I just can’t. He’s too much a part of his work that I can’t even go “but TV and movies are a collaborative effort and lots of

I never watched Buffy, but definitely heard loud and clear the adulation with which Whedon was showered in a way that made me want to avoid it even more. I didn’t pay attention to much related to Whedon, but I did catch his take on Much Ado About Nothing, which left me even more perplexed. I didn’t understand why he

It’s interesting because I’m actually watching Buffy/Angel for the first time now and I’m doing this like it was orginally planned, so Buffy ep 501, then Angel ep 201 and so on.

I remember how even when the show was first airing, people were uneasy about how Cordy’s story in Season 4 basically amounts to a year-long rape and murder, and wondered if Whedon was taking revenge for her pregnancy screwing up his plans for the season. So this really isn’t that surprising, but hopefully the level of

Charisma has alluded to some of this before and rumors have swirled, and back in 2017 Joss’ ex wife revealed some of his terrible behavior too — I know that people want to give their well-regarded heroes the benefit of the doubt, but this is truly an open secret people wanted to ignore because they like his work.

Thing is, he doesn’t really owe us details - it’s an open secret that Joss Whedon is a piece of crap. We didn’t know the details of him firing Charisma, but it’s been known he did it because she was pregnant for a long time. And his ex-wife wrote an open letter a few years back detailing some of his abuse and

I hope that the specificity of what she’s saying (the knock against Fisher) and the fact that she never had a personal relationship with him (the knock against Cole’s article) mean that people actually listen. I think that the rumblings that we’ve seen, like his exit from the HBO show, indicate that he might get held

Why can’t we have nice things like people who create enduring, endearing, empowering entertainment and who aren’t abusive douchenozzles?

Exactly! I’m pretty sure that I knew about what she’s talking about in like 2004 or 2005, but as you said there was no paper trail, so it was all too easy to brush aside. And honestly before the Kai Cole article, I wonder how much it would’ve been believed or would it have been passed off as sour grapes.

I’ve been waiting for someone to finally call him out for specific stuff. It seemed like it had to be there, but Fischer’s allegations were so vague and ambiguous. Which made it easy for Whedon to remain silent because he wasn’t being accused of anything.

It was something I was aware of, but found easy to...not dismiss, exactly, but take with a grain of salt because I could never find an original source (think it was stuff she had said at conventions, and therefore there was no real paper trail).

Even at the time I was uneasy about the cult of personality that surrounded Whedon and his work. It’s difficult to describe but within a few years, something just felt off, from the cast performances to the energy to how it felt like the shows had lost all purpose beyond his brand. Everything. It’s hard to even watch

The thing though is that what Carpenter is saying has pretty much been an open secret since it happened. We should’ve been listening then and not letting his “feminist credentials” sway us. And I 100% count myself as someone who should’ve done better then, as I heard it and dismissed it.

Now I really need to see John Oliver playing the viola.

Back in undergrad had a friend that made a really big deal about having sex in his parents bed when they were away. I never understood why that was a thing. Even using their bathroom grosses me out, let alone where they spend 8 hours sweating and farting.

What Muppet would John Oliver be if John Oliver were, indeed, a Muppet?

So. I mean. What?

I’m very disappointed in Dan. I mean, he’s right, that LW#3's boyfriend should run, run, run, and never look back. But DEMANDING INSECURE CAPS BOY? He’d rag on a letter writer for two paragraphs for missing the obvious acronym there. How about DEMANDING INSECURE CAPS KID?
