I watch both shows and I don't equate anyone in real life with a character who has their condition. 

If someone steals $50,000 and buy a car with it, the government has to prove that person stole the $50,000. At that point, they can confiscate $50K (or enough property to sell it for $50K) and return it to the person it was stolen from.
