Can confirm: When my kid first saw Phantom Menace (at age 6 or so), he found it easy to identify with young Anakin and thought Jar Jar was funny. Which is precisely what GL was probably going for in the first place; pulling in a whole new generation of fans.

Best was actually visible as an extra (along with Anthony Daniels) in a crowd scene at the bar in “Attack of the Clones”, when Anakin was sent off to look for Zam Wesell.
