For a while his companions were almost exclusively alien: Leela, k9, Romana I, Romana II, and Adric. It started to create a disconnect. The contemporary human companion is a way for the audience to project ourselves into the show. I really enjoyed New-Who's use of Rose as our anchor, and Jack as our alien.
