For any repair work that I need, whether car, computer, or home, I compare doing it myself with hiring a pro. Factor time and skill and a lot of jobs make more sense to buy the tools and go for it. Over time my tool collection expands, my skills grow, and DIY gets relatively cheaper.

Most tools. (i.e. hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, saws, drills, dremels, etc.) Just buy a tool whenever you need it and try to work with what you have whenever possible.
