This is something that NO ONE talks about, or really even acknowledges. Streaming 4k HDR rips from your own server. These videos can push 60+ Mbps bitrate, and the Shield is the ONLY device I’ve seen that can handle it.

I’ve got a Shield TV and love it but as someone else mentioned, there’s no DirectTVNow support. And Hulu has already said that they have no plans to support Android TV for their new interface. That’s good if you don’t like the new interface, bad if you want to use Hulu Live TV.

I have used every device mentioned in this article. The Shield TV offers the most and stands well ahead of the others. Only downside would be the cost and if you own a bunch of Apple movies (I am sure there might be a way to watch them on the shield, but I don’t have that problem). 

While I have not had these exact models, I’ve had a box from each vendor, and you’re pretty spot on that it really depends into which ecosystem you’ve invested, because all are capable.

have a Shield TV and it still does not work with DIrectTVnow except through chromecast (Which I find buggy as hell) Other than that I absolutely love it. Great interface and very easy to use.

The latest interface update makes the whole platform easier to use, in terms of searching for content and picking up where you left off, and it can even act as a Plex server if you need it to.

The Shield TV also works as a plex server, to some people that is a big deal
