You can “feel” that prison conditions should be harsher and you can “feel” that would have a deterrent effect all you want, but you are wrong about the deterrent effect. Deterrence can be quantified and making prison crappier does nothing to deter crime.

Sometimes you hear things and you have empathy or feel for the person and other times you don’t.

I’ve noticed that’s how it is with people of privilege. Until they need food stamps the whole entitlement system is viewed as a horrid drain, but the second their fortunes run out they eagerly hop into line.
