An incredible episode of television. I know it may sound odd for a show that has made us cry so many times, but to do that episode, and not be saccharine and over the top, takes an incredible threading of the needle, and they did it.

I knew going into this episode that is was going to feature Randall being he usual pedantic and self righteous self. I was very happy to see the evolved and mature versions of Kate and Kevin appear to match Randall so that they all could come full circle. I was so moved by the imagery of this episode and the cuts…
Are we supposed to doubt Earn? My read on the ending was far less cynical than the review’s. And it is in part, because Earn has become a better manager. Here, Al just went on an oddessy where his pixie dream guide had him doubting everything about who he is and what he’s got, and in the end when he projects those…
it’s not just the music industry but every white dominant space that Black and non-white folks have to move through.
If a piece of art (or artifact) generates the kind of questions and ideas that “Trini 2 Da Bone” is doing, I think that’s a success. There’s so much here, where to begin? To me, Sylvia’s relationship with her own kids is so packed with meaning that I want to ask if, possibly, Sylvia actually did feel more for the…
You completely missed the fact that the wife was carrying Telfar bag. Telfar is a higher-end purse/bag brand created by a Black man for Black women who didn’t have exclusivity to our own mid-luxury brands.
I just don’t believe he didn’t try to pull it out at an earlier time. When he proposed at 18? On their wedding night? When she found out he cheated and he wanted desperately to win her back? When they briefly reunited in their 30s? On every one of those occasions, Kevin would have thought this was the right romantic…
I got a real kick out of how, regardless of the ending, the big mystery of “Who did Kevin hook up with last night?” from the previous episode turned out to be NO ONE. That was plenty subverting expectations for me.
I really liked how the camera held on Paper Boi’s face during the song. Brian Tyree Henry plays this so well- his impatience is palpable, but it slowly morphs, maybe to consternation, as the kid performs.
I didn’t think the temporal layout was as “bewildering” as suggested. The story was told “The Last Five Years”-style, with Kate and Toby’s relationship told forward and Kate and Philip’s story told backward. The epilogue then continued forward after Kate’s second wedding
Cool story bro, go re-watch Breaking Bad for the 100th time you edgy tart.
Sincerely,
Mid-30's male who hates wine.
I know, pointed satire is a difficult concept to grapple with. But if you keep trying and working at it, I’m confident that your grandchildren will be able to figure it out.
Ha! I think we all get it. You’re not into reparations.
Dick move, though. It’s bad enough you’re offing yourself, you have to shut down the pool also?
I’ve not been the biggest fan of Kate throughout the series, so I find it strange that now that she’s finally a character with clear motivations and pathologies, she’s seemingly getting more hate than ever.
I think you and Toby are dead wrong in this instance. Disability activists emphasize exactly what Kate is teaching Jack which is how to live with his disability and not be caged by it.
Hi Lisa — I’ve moved on from The AV Club (just watched this Atlanta episode though and was seeking out reviews) and am now king of only occasionally reviewing shows. Currently working fulltime as a showrunner’s assistant on a TV show. I did review the first couple of episodes though for TheWrap (and if the stars align…
Hate to say it but it’s because a lot of pop culture tv writers don’t have the proper framing or cultural knowledge to draw from, to fully explore the themes of this uniquely black and nerdy show. Glover is a blerd (I say as a blerd myself), a lot of his weird nerd shit really hits with my white nerd friends, but…
I’m not saying they call him “Number Three” because of his race.
