You said that apple sold plenty of macs and it made a bunch of money. Microsoft does not make hardware, so it does not profit in this area. It will also not profit from future tablet hardware, because they develop the software (being Windows 8).

I've thought about the car analogy and it just doesn't work. When you pay for a ferrari, it shows, it feels, it sounds. When you pay premium for pretty much the same innards that's where the line is.
