well the F18 is unable to penetrate enemy air defenses like the F35 can, so I think everyone is making the right decision.

they still have the restrictive software in the jet, but it has higher Angles of Attack then the F16 and F18...It was designed to penetrate enemy air space and to cripple enemy air defenses day 1, this cant be done with the F16/F18/A10 even F15.

The bombers still got thru and pounded N. Vietnam/Hanoi...not that it mattered they didnt produce any military equipment it all came from China/Russia and we decided not to go nuclear. We are now much better equipped to dispatch SAMs...they are more of a nuisance to plan for, short term defense...what good is that?

We lost 30 A10s/F16/F15s/F18s in 1991 to Saddams SA2's...missile defenses have improved greatly in 25 years, yet our aircraft have not. Stealth is now a requirement, we can no longer use un-stealthy aircraft vs heavily defended air space.

better range/fuel efficiency, lower costs (X2 the cost with engine, X2 the replacements, X2 the repairs, X2 the down time), the more engines you have the higher % of engine failure/loss to the jet...to name a few big ones.
