I think both can be helpful. In the past I've just labeled which cable goes to what (not which socket it goes into), but labeling both ends would certainly be useful. This is still faster though.

Better to just label the cables. A photo of four or five HDMI cables isn't telling you anything when you want to plug in your devices on the same input channels again.
