Eh... 12 was fine. The problem was that the protagonist of the game wasn’t the protagonist of the plot. You’re essentially playing the game from the point of view of someone who is basically a sidekick to the actual hero.
In fairness, many of the older FF games had battle systems that were easily exploited by mashing the attack command over and over.XIII’s story sucked but it still was one of the few FF games I’ve played where the battle system actually had me thinking.
Odd, I’m 35 and I heard Led Zeppelin played on the radio all the time, it’s not like there weren’t classics stations that played 70's music. Especially at the time when grunge became big, it was hard to know of Pearl Jam and Nirvana without also knowing of some of the major rock that came before those bands and having…
There’s so much wrong with XIII as far as execution but, personally, it had all of the right ingredients for an actually good FF game. Strong character and story development were actually there and a lot of good could’ve come from it. It was just very poorly executed. The Hope/Lightning story for example could’ve been…
I used to think that XIII was a new take on the franchise, too, but returning to X-2 now that it’s been released on Steam, you can see all of the groundwork that was laid for XIII in that game.
Long, drawn out dramatic dialogue scenes have been in FF since the 2nd game and perfected in the 4th. It's a mainstay of FF and became a template for JRPGs in general.
There’sa difference between being hostile to your fanbase and making games they don’t like. Capcom and Konami straight-up abandoned franchises and alienated their fans. They didn't lose their fans by making good games that don't follow what their fanbase wants, they lost them by not making any at all.
Mega Man didn’t die because people thought it needed fixing. It died because the only person at Capcom that fought for the franchise left on very poor terms with the company.
You know what? Comparing the cast of XV to Gundam Wing just made me that much more interested in the game.
They seem to be doing that with Setsuna and the Bravely series.
I think there have been so many FF games that it’s honestly hard to pin point what makes an FF game. Is it the turn based? The drama? The love story? The steampunk? The castles? The motorbikes? The swords? The magic? The guns? Maybe it’s all of them.
Yeah. I’m interested to see how all this will turn out. I have a lot of respect for how Tabata thinks, especially how he’s open and frank, and am keen to see if that translates into a solid finished title.
I couldn’t have found a more perfect example of what Tabata was talking about if I had TRIED. Well done.
He’s right. The company is taking a huge risk to reinvigorate the series. They have to though, because what was happening before wasn’t working. Maybe a little, but more change is needed.. There’s so much competition out there nowadays
I think the English equivalent is “too many cooks spoil the broth”.
I dunno, I’d argue that 12 was the last ‘True’ Final Fantasy.
I clicked the star button 100 times, but it only gave you one star.
I disagree, but still laughed.
First comedy and now this. When will Family Guy stop ruining things.
