He'll be charged. The Wayne County prosecutor is pretty well-regarded, actually. She's the one who was featured a few years ago in the national press for seeking federal funds to deal with Detroit's rape kit backlog.

No one wins an anecdote war, but I'll just share that my experience living in a community that borders Detroit does not bear up this thesis. I've had uniformly good luck with the police, and can't imagine that a 3 am phone call about a bloody woman on my porch would be met with anything but urgency.
I agree, unfortunately, that IN DETROIT such a call might take a while to get answered because of a lack of resources. However, Dearborn Heights is not in Detroit. They have their own police department, which is presumably better funded and staffed than the one serving a city the size of SF, Boston, and Manhattan…
Maybe I have too much faith in cops, but I think "There's someone knocking frantically at my door, calling for help, and bleeding" would get the cops there reasonably quickly, even in the Detroit area (particularly in a middle-class suburb).
You are full of it, and have clearly never left your sheltered bubble of exurban bliss. This incident happened in Dearborn Heights, a predominantly white middle class suburb. It is no more Detroit than Bloomfield Hills (one of the nation's richest zipcodes) is Detroit.
Even if this had happened in Detroit, though,…
This, plus the gun was raised since she was shot in the face. I can't even imagine a scenario in which a shotgun accidentally shoots someone in the face. If the gun is dangling and the weight of the stock is pushing the barrel up, then it would be hard to have your finger on the trigger.
We will never know her, because this jackass shot her in the face. Who cares if she was politely knocking? Maybe she was leaning on the doorbell. This remains a matter for the police. Dearborn Heights is not Detroit. Police response times are quite fast. A cop could have been there in 5 minutes or less. Instead…
Again, Dearborn Heights IS NOT IN DETROIT. Even if it were in Detroit (which it isn't), this man had the option of staying on the other side of a locked and closed door, and calling 911. That's what I would do, and I live a hell of a lot closer to the Detroit line than this guy does.
He opened the door and then…
To be clear, I'm not saying that he never saw those images. I'm saying no one ever taught him to *think* about those images. Having attended Jesus School, I know no one ever thought to teach us about race and media, and the only mention of Black folks was a Jesus-like portrayal of MLK that stripped him of all anger…
I don't know about a Skinner Box, but he was raised in Canada and homeschooled by fundamentalists, then "discovered" as a young teen. So...I'm willing to believe that he didn't encounter the monkey stereotype in Jesus School. However, he has been appropriating Black culture for years, you would think that someone…
Yeah, it was the part about wanting to apologize to his wife, Huma, that tipped me off.
This is...not surprising. If you seek out weight loss surgery, which carries serious risks and side effects, it isn't because you are feeling sexy and self-confident in your skin. So, women who are feeling uncomfortable with their weight seek out drastic solutions, and feel better about themselves after they have…
What I like about TCOYF is that it helps you to know if "winging it" is even going to work. If you are ovulating at a weird time, you might not know and might not be trying around that time. Of course, I love science, so downloading an app and charting my temperature is seriously fun for me. YMMV.
The book isn't explicitly religious, it's more of a primer on how to know when you are most fertile so that you can either try to conceive or try to avoid conception.
For folks trying to have a baby, there is no difference in how you would use the information in the book.
When it comes to birth control, though,…
This feels so true. Especially if you already have young kids, I can totally see not having birth control on hand.
Excellent news! Yeah, you'll feel panicked in the days coming up on your first period after you start trying, and probably have mixed emotions if Aunt Flo comes to town. If you do find that it's taking some time, can I suggest reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility? I effing love that book, and think every woman…
I don't think it's dogpiling to point out that "gypsy" is widely considered an ethnic slur and that using it to describe someone who isn't Roma is distasteful, not matter what is in the news.
I liked her article, but I'd have the same reaction if she'd used the phrase "colored boy" or any other outdated and offensive…
I've worked with the Roma community in Eastern Europe, and it's not that easy. Yes, school is free, but the Roma are pushed into special "Roma schools" that get the least-motivated teachers and the worst facilities. The classes are taught in the local language, whether or not the children are functional in that…
The suggestions that they were going to traffic her for sex are sadly possible, as is the possibility that she got more money as a beggar because she wasn't Roma.
Yes. This. There were at least two other minors taken into custody along with "Maria." Has anyone asked about their welfare? Did anyone do a DNA test on them?
